Expanded metal hood?

ive only see 1 hood vent mod that is suppose to keep the rain out.

All louvers are designed to help keep the rain out. Sure, some angled rain or water running down the hood could enter, but they block normal downward rainfall. That's why they are louvers and not just slots or holes in the hood.

no, i mean i saw one with some household vents with the little arm to open and close the vents similar to this, theres a thread going on about the install of these

I got a stick on cowel induction scoop from summit 65 shipped. Vent's at slow speeds sucks in cold air at high speeds. Super easy install just cut out your hole and stick it on. Looks good to imo.

oh, you mean like that... try the search terms 'honkey' 'too cheap to leave home depot' or just plain 'ghetto fab'

How about something like this?(pic is link)

(Thanks again to Gojeep, excelent web site)

They have it on Quadratec also...

I think it would be a better to get a fan on the hood. Cut out a circle the size of an cooling system E-fan your going to use. and then get some sheet metal to cover the hole when your not wheeling. Put in the Fan (using wing nuts and quick disconnects) when wheeling and then put the sheet metal on when DD.

a lot easier and you would be forcing air through the bay.

Wow, I didn't know this thread would last that long.

I've got one question though, how often do you all wheel in the rain?

Also if you are good you could make it look sexy if that's what your going for.

If you get the expanded metal in the same guage as the stock hood's sheet metal, it would actually be a lot lighter than the stock hood.

I know there are a lot of threads about hood venting; but am pretty sure there aren't many about expanded metal hoods.

I also know that cowl hoods look cooler, they also cost a lot of money, or involve a decent amount of fab work. The expanded mtal hood is just cut out the old stuff, weld in the new stuff.

Everybody knows that our under hood temps are too high at slow crawl speeds right? Some people put hood vents in with good results, but why not make the entire hood a vent?

Why not go to the junkyard and get an XJ hood, cut off as much sheetmetal as possible and replace it with expanded metal? You can leave your DD hood alone aside from installing hood pins front and rear for easy removal. You do the same to your vent hood.

I think this would work to vent large amounts of hot air from under your hood as well as keeping your stock hood comparably untouched. It would also protect your engine bay from large debri. You would only put it on when you go on wheeling trips, etc.

So what I want is for someone to tell me why this would not work.
run 1 inch spacers under the hood hings. Props the rear up but still works like it should.

In place of a Expanded Metal you could also use the plastic version or even a thin fabric. If you do the fabric you could do some rain replant and I don't see why that could not be used in a DD scenario either...

Just a thought, but have you ever seen the hood vents on K9 police cruisers? I know there are aftermarket companies that make the hoods for Crown Vic's. Does anyone make a similar hood for police spec XJ's?

Nope, have never. All they usually have are bars on the rear windows so they can leave the windows open without fear of the dog leaving teh car. Nothing on the hoods.

Not the best pics, but this is what I was talking about. I believe it's a CHP K-9 cruiser.

That has nothing to do with it being a K9 unit, that's probably just something that the cop shop added for operating vehicles in the desert. Not factory that's for sure, Ford doesn't offer that in the CVPI literature.
