wiring for roof rack lights

Im trying to wire up my lights on my roof rack and and having some trouble. The gromet in the top of the passenger side door jam wont let my wires go in but about 10 inches and then it hits something. I know that several of you guys have done this before so let me know if you have any ideas.

headliner?, i drilled my roof hole, popped the headliner down and ran the wire along the windshield pillar under the dash to my switches

I did the same except mine is under the factory rack rails, and goes down inside the B piller to a relay box in the back.
