Overdrive trans???

Went to parts store recently to purchase an auto. trans. filter/gasket kit, and was asked if the XJ has overdrive.... Well, it doesn't have a selectable OD, but apparently does have four speeds...('99) Thus, please advise whether or not this trans. is considered to have 'overdrive'...

Yep. The D with a circle around it (an O more or less) means overdrive. It will run through your 3 gears then lock into overdrive and drop the RPMs.

AW4 is the only auto found behind the 4.0s in XJs, 1st gear is 2.80, 2nd is 1.54, 3rd is direct drive 1:1, and 4th is .75 overdrive (for your year, 87-90 are .705).

O and there is no filter, it's a washable stainless steel screen so just get a gasket.
