I recently purchased an XJ.
The previous owner ran gear oil in it...80-90? I have owned an 88 before this and recall that (if i remeber correctly), the trans case runs ATF?
Is thsi true? Can anyone help with knowledge of this?
Reason I am asking, is that I am getting a loud noise from the case when the 4H/4L is engaged, but not when it is in 2H. It is an NP242, with Auto.

You are correct.

ATF is what you need. I just rebuilt mine about 5K ago. Put some cheapie wal mart fluid in for about 500 miles and then drained and refilled with mobile 1 synthetic. Lots of people claim their case runs cooler with synthetic.

Hopefully your transfercase isn't toast...

I recently changed my atf fluid. Synthetic was somewhere around $1 more a quart. It was a no brainer.

Synthetic or not is your choice, not sure if one is better or not- but regardless make sure your fluid is at the proper level and is replaced every once in a while as it should be. Use mercon/dexron fluid.
