I started on the mounts today. I tied in the steering box bolts and I havent drilled out the hole furthest back yet. Its 1/4 inch doubled up front. Should these be strong enough for some tough pulls, and maybe a winch later down the road? Any advice or hints will be greatly appreciated. I'll get some pictures of them mounted up tomorrow (it's rainin).

That's a nice bumper you've made. I'm getting all my steel for free from a friends dad, not exactly what I want to use, but beggers can't be choosers. This is my first time working with metal, I know its not the best, but hopefully it will hold up. Here's the drivers side mounted and some of the hardware. Still gotta weld it up and stuff.

mine looked like this:

tow points welded to the bumper mount:

Holes thrue the 2x4 so I could weld both front and back:

May have won the ugly bumper award, I would not put a front hitch on it again, or if I did back set it so it did not stick out so far.
Also I wish I could have made it a little higher, and got it up closer to the body.

letterman why didnt you run the hich behind the bumper so the lock pin was behind and the front was flush?

That would have been the better way to build it, I had bought the hitch from a trailer shop, and the way it was pre-drilled it would not fit, the hole was too close to the front.
There was no real point in a Hitch in front anyway, I had the 2 tow points on each side.
Well maybe good for a spotters chair:

you could have flipped it around, thats what i did to mine. the main reason i put a hitch in mine was to use a multi mount winch, that way i can use a winch in the back and store it inside the jeep while not wheeling. im still trying to figure out how i can mount reciever tube on the sides of the jeep so i can winch myself over when i flop, or cross a collapsed part of a trail on the side of a hill.

No way! then it would not have had the over-lap'in end to it:

i started with one of those, too:

http://pictures.myxj.net/rearbumper-v2_1-24-06/DSC07789.JPG
turned it around and cut it down so i could have it more flush mounted in the bumper
http://pictures.myxj.net/rearbumper3-14-06/DSC08504.JPG
just enough room for the pin (2" x 4" x 3/16")
http://pictures.myxj.net/rearbumper3-14-06/DSC08507.JPG
worked out well for me

Mine mount the same way, but built with 3/4" stock a little overkill but it works :D.
