I haven't been on here in a while. Here is what my rig looked like last time I posted.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/afd516/exocage017.jpg

Then I went from 36"s to 38"s.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/afd516/DSCF2035.jpg

I tried on some 39.5 Iroks but I decided they were to ballony and I was getting past the limits of my front axle.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/afd516/DSCF2010.jpg

I went out this past weekend and decided that the bidy was getting in the way of the rocks so it is undergoing some modification. I should be done with it in about a week or so.

Recage it. It will have 4 seats and harness. The new cage will have the leafs tied into it for support of the rear suspension.

Run tubing from the cage to some plates I have mounted over the front and rear shackles. I will post pics when I do it. I won't be able to start work on it again until sat.

It has not been all that bad, actually. It isn't a daily driver (obviously) so, there was no chance of it flying off in an accident. I mounted it there because, at the time it what worked the best for me. You learn to look past it after a while. I forget it is there sometimes. It will be remounted in the rear after the cage is done just for you, though.

Thanks. The block was put there to get it out of the way. I usually keep it shackled to the passenger seat belt bar on the floor. Since I gutted the interior I moved it. I will post pics as I go along.

Just seems like in the line of sight, and obstruction to opening the hood would be less than ideal is all...

Yep, It has 4340 shafts and Longfields 300m joints. I have had good luck with it so far. I have broken one shaft. Which, was warrantied and the maker said it was defective once they recieved the broken pieces.

The rear is a 9" with 35 spline shafts so, not to much worry about out back.

WheelinJR
March 30th, 2007, 16:35
are you planning on moving your shackle mount point at all to improve the shackle angle? It looks like you've got the usual vertical shackle that Cherokees always have, but you're using a boomerang.

I'm always curious to see what people choose to do here, myself I am working on a relocation to move it down and forward.

afd516
March 30th, 2007, 17:15
Down and foward seems like it would make it worse. I may be unclear as to what you are talking about. I actually boxed in the mounts and put a plate over the top to mount the cage to. This will support the upward pressure of the spring mounts. The leafs are BOR with the 1.5 boomerang shackes. I also clearanced the bottom of the box the the shackle is in. The shackle doesn't hit any where and works well.

When you move yours down it would be the same as cutting off the bottom of the shackle box. When the shacke moves back it clears the mount.

I'm referring to what this guy did in this thread.

http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=910949

Instead of having the straight up and down angle, moving the location down and forward creates the desired 45* action. Having that angle and the ability to travel like that greatly helps the rear suspension travel

Makes sense. I will have to consider that while I am at it. Thanks for the imput. The boomerang shakle may make it even better than a straight shackle. :dunno:

WheelinJR
March 31st, 2007, 16:23
The boomerangs definitely work, just alot of people run into the problem of them not having enough space to swivel and do their job.

I know that one of my big problems with my stock shackle box is that the bumper bolts run thru it and the shackles hit the bumper bolts when they move. Obviously that might not be an issue for you with how your rig is built.

Lookin good Sam. I'm always right behind ya, I just upgraded to some 36 sx's, and I'm thinking of doing a bit of chopping myself. Maybe not as extensive as you, but sort of like a truck rear end. I busted both rear pieces of glass, so I might as well, right?

Here is some more pics.

It is hard to see but I added the rear top cross bar and two bars that form a V from the center top bar.
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/afd516/Buggied%20XJ/DSCF2614.jpg

Hard to see in this pic. but there is a bar from the hoop that goes around the box going down to a 3/16ths plate I have bolted over the rear spring box. I haven't tied the front ones into the frame yet.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b6/afd516/Buggied%20XJ/DSCF2615.jpg

I have got the two front seats in on sliders and will post pics of that later. I am going to work on the rear bucket seats and add some more cross bars behind each of the front and rear seats for more support and a place to anchor some harnesses. I still have to then tie in the plates over the front leaf spring mounts and support the long span that goes over the rear tire.

Something's missing...seats!

It looks pretty good. Are you planning on sheeting up any inner wheel wells or anything like that, or is this thing pretty much always in the dry? Other than that, if I were to do something like that I would strongly consider doing some form of boatside flat plate between your rockers and the bottom of the "frame"

afd516
April 19th, 2007, 15:07
There will be no fender wells. If you want to ride in it you will have to deal with the mud, weather or whatever else goes along with wheelin. I plan on doing a t and t long arm that comes with the frame stiffener. That is when I plan on doing some type of plate from the frame rail to the rocker. I know I don't need a frame stiffener but it gives me a good place to weld to and will strengthen up the frame itself nicely, instead of it getting gouged by the rocks.

afd516

Actually, the neighbors across the street are renting. The do not want to move till next year so they are hoping it won't sell. It is funny though, anytime someone come to look at the house, I am out there making all kinds of racket (compressor, grinder, chop saw, etc.) So, my neighbors are cool with it as long as they don't have to move yet.

All my other neighbors are cool to. They always come over and ask my for help on little stuff. It is a fair trade off.

I have more pics, I just have not had time to post them. Will do soon.

I have a few pieces of tube here and there to add but for the most part I am done. The remaining tube is mainly for the shoulder belts. Those will be done before my next trip. I don't plan on rolling it this weekend. I am not ready to test out the cage.

I ended up trashing all the work I did on my cage at Trees Ranch. I finished the cage enough to where the unibody frame would be supported but not the cage itself should I roll it. I planned on finishing it after my rub to Tress. Sure enough I rolled it.

I did an endo and landed on my lid then did a 1.5 barrel roll. I took out the cage and a passenger front tire bead. We set the tire and I finished the weekend.

When I got back, I cut off all my new cage and built a new cage, again. This time it is complete.

yeah its an arcade bump shifter...

www.awshifting.com recommends them as a good option for use with their manual shift setups.

You need to add some support to the circled areas. If you where to roll that hard the top part of the cage could push down do to the lack of support. See what I'm talking about?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/scoobyxj/DSCF2832.jpg

It would also be a good idea to put some sort of roof over the passenger area. So someone couldn't inadvertently put there hand on the cage and get there fingers crushed.
