will a wrangler 6cyl tcase work in an xj, or is the clocking different? i got a hole in my tcase from a malicious rock, it patched with jb weld for the moment so i can drive back and forth to work.

Yes, the YJ 231 will bolt right up. Make certain on the spline count whether it is 21 or 23 spline.

You also need to check spline length.

The difference that I have found is that the AW4 output shaft is approx 1/2 inch longer than an AX-15 output shaft. So the input spline (21 or 23) needs to accomodate the extra length from the AW-4 output shaft. If your xj is an aw4 you could add an adapter plate between the ax-15 tcase and the AW-4 or you could pull the input shaft from the xj tcase and put it in the new case.
