It should. Use the spider gears from the 96, because the 89 has non c clip axles.

Same deal as above. I think the OP went back and edited the question, within the 1 minute time frame, because I swear it said D35 to begin with.

if your talking about a D30 FRONT AXLE...
the '89 will be high pinion with reverse rotation gears.
I know that the newer XJ's (I don't know the years) got low pinion D30's an will have standard rotation gears... so do some searches or maybe someone will chime in.
This difference will prevent the carriers from being interchangable.
