on the aw4 tranny in a 2wd it was explained to me that the tail cone is removed and can be directly mated to a np231 tranfer making it 4wd. can anyone shed light on this topic for me?

If your trying to replace a 4WD trany with a trany from 2WD Cherokee? You should have all the part need in the old trany. There is some difference between years. But for your needs all should go well. As long as the 4WD trany is not locked up.
Lub all seals and carefully put it together. DON'T force parts together.
