Jeep Cherokee Engine piece

I have a 2000 XJ sport and my buddy has a 2001. His engine has an extra part that I have seen on 00 and 01. It is a black canister next to the ac at the top left corner Does anyone know what this is and why I do not have it.

Clearly it is an automatic engine compartment degreaser and washer :shocked:

Where's the hose lead to?

Get us a better pic say looking straight down on it. Where does the hose go that is attached to it? Any wires on it?

Kind of looks like a air pump, is the picture a California emission vehicle and yours is not?

it's an EVAP canister. "The emission control system that prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine."
