Does anyone know if anybody out there is making these? I've seen a few, but could never find out where they came from. I don't want the factory swing-out. I need something a little beefier.

From what I've been able to glean it's a homebrew job involving welding extension tubes off a rear hitch to where you want the bearing to go through your corner cap. I know GoJeep's done a few, but other than that, I've not seen anything for sale. HTH

Send me your email and I will send you pictures of how I did mine off the rear hitch and kept the rear bumper intact.

Cost me about $700AUD, which is about $500AUD (if not more) less than a replacement bar and carrier here in Australia

Holy Crap, $542 for that thing. I might as well just buy a new bumpr, get more protection, and look way cooler.

I was waiting for that ;) you cannot make a direct dollar comparision, as an example the XJ new here cost about $44000 for the sport. Maybe the average wage in Aus is higher than the US. Of course this means its not worthwhile you guys importing from us. Like I said a replacement bar here is about $1000AUD without the carrier.

Believe it or not Wran winch company makes a swing away designed just for the XJ but being War it's probably expensive. Good Luck

i dont even know where to start...
lemme list other websites that have swing away tire carriers:
http://www.ajsoffroadarmor.com/
http://www.bulletproofmfg.com/
http://www.custom4x4fabrication.com/rear_xj.html
http://www.durango4x4.com/xjrear.htm
and they are alphabetical in my favorites list - the point here is to have one that attaches and keeps the stock bumper...

maybe 100 since i havent decied if i like the way its setup or not
third, cant wait to see pics of the homebuilt one, i thnik that would be the route i would go.

Here are the pictures I promised. Entire swing arm carrier mounts to stock hitch with 4 grade 8 bolts. I was afraid it would vibrate a lot but it does not. Have had it for 3 years. Carrying 32s on it now, going to 33s.
This way I kept the entire bumper stock and could easily remove the assembly to get at the gas tank or anything else.
Final product....see avatar, has license plate assembly mounted on it, etc.
I have been very pleased with performance of the design. Ask TRNDRV, he was going to copy it. Don't know if he ever did. Haven't had the pleasure of wheelin with him lately.

I saw this jeep on ebay today. He has a swing out mounted on the rear stock bumper. I think it looks better than that one from Australia. I can't tell what kind it is but I emailed him and asked.

I have hit it on rocks any number of times. It has been to Tellico several times, MOAB and Colorado once. I have backed up against trees once or twice and used it as a soft bumper.
Usually the only time it hits is when you drop the ass end down in a hole or off a ledge.

Wouldn't this be easier? (http://community.webshots.com/album/111070877eezNJH)
And no, I haven't made one yet. Too many irons in the fire as it is now.
New 44's front and rear, blah, blah, blah........
Hope this helps,
Dan.

Your tire carrier looks great. How did you make the hinge? I can't tell what is inside from the photos. Please give me some details.
I made a carrier for our trip to Moab two weeks ago. I did not have time to work out the details with the hinge or latch. I just welded it to the trailer hitch so I could remove it when we got back. It was a major pain having the back door useless for the whole trip(especially with three daughters). On each side of the tire mount, I welded on a jerry can holder with supports. To mount the tire, I cut the shaft on an axle to use the hub to mount the spare. This set-up worked out well, but I need it to open so I can get into the back of the Jeep.
