Can you flat tow an XJ with an auto. trans. without damaging the transmission. Also would the brackets used to attach the towbar be strong enough for tow points out on the trail. Any info would be appreciated.

Jeep Cherokees are very popular for towing behind motorhomes. Just put the XC into neutral, the trans in park, and leave the key switch in the first position to unlock the steering column.
Ours has a Roadmaster baseplate with an added 1 1/2" square tubing (1/4" thick) crossmember welded in to reinforce the front end. The two 1 1/2" receivers work great as recovery points. See the following link to see how it is installed.
