Jack up one side and put it into gear, if the tire in the air only spins then you've got an open diff. If it falls off then you have a L/S.


Or you could take off the diff cover and see if there is anything in the middle where spider gears should be.
 
Or better yet, jack up both sides and while in neutral, spin the passenger tire forward. If the drivers side turns forward, you have a limited slip diff. If it turns backward, its an open diff.
