can a neutral safety switch shut an engine down?

i've got a 96 jeep xj. starts and runs perfectly fine but then it shuts off suddenly. the only code i'm getting is a p1899 aka neutral safety switch. i only get this code when it shuts down and throws a code. is there any way a neutral safety switch can shut an engine down? i've never had a problem not being able to turn the motor over.

Check/test/swap/replace your auto shut down relay. Not sure exactly which one it is, but it should be in the PDC underhood behind the battery.
