One more oil leak cause...

After reading all the oil leak threads here, and crawling
under the Jeep numerous times, I finally found the
leak source. It was hard to find because the oil was
covering the oil pan and getting on everything
underneath after driving. I had checked everything
from the pressure sender to valve cover, etc, with
no luck. Began to think it might be the rear main
seal leaking. After a very thorough search with a
good droplight this afternoon, finally found it...

The oil drain plug gasket had cracked, and was
slowly seeping oil. It's one of those polycarbonate
(hard) gaskets, and I'd retightened it a few days
ago with no change in the leak. Looking back, that
probably made the leak worse. Anyway, I'm a happy
puppy knowing that the fix will be so easy.

What about using a copper or aluminum gasket
this time around, instead of the polycarbonate?

Original washers were aluminum.

How long since your last oil change?

When mine started leaking after an oil change, I bought a new plug, which came with a new aluminum washer, and just worked fast swapping them out. Very little oil loss.

In an emergency, I have taken an X-Acto knife and cut a piece of thin cardboard (what I used was an old Pik-A-Nut hardware box, but a cereal box or similar would be the same stuff) that lasted a whole oil change interval on my old Porsche 944 without leaking, then I just replaced it with the correct aluminum washer.

I have a Fumoto oil drain valve, and actually I changed
the oil recently. Fiddling with the valve probably started
the leak. I plan on using the 'fast swap' method you used.:D
Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the tip. I had considered cutting a gasket from
some thick gasket material I have. Might still do that until
I can get a real gasket. Think maybe I'll go with copper as a replacement...?
