Axle nomenclature

I have a 01 xj, and per the build sheet, it has a 181FBI(low pinion Dana 30 front axle). My factory service manual has a dissertation on this axle, but also has a section on a 186FBI. Any body know what a 186FBI is?

Probably the D44 front that was installed on some export XJ's sent to South America.

iirc, the number is the diameter of the ring gear in mm. 181mm = 7.2" (or thereabouts)

A few threads about this:

A drivetrain website's quite extensive listing of ChryCo rearend codes and their vehicle applications: http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_cat...r_dodge_or_jeep_rear_end_ratio_do_i_have.html

198RBI = 198mm Rear Beam, Iron = ZJ D35
181FBI = 181mm Front Beam, Iron (high and low pinion regular dana 30)
186FBI = 186mm Front Beam, Iron (super30 used in WJ, JK, etc)
226RBA = 226mm Rear Beam, Aluminum (the D44a used in V8 ZJs and some other trim level / package ZJs)
216RBI = 216mm Rear Beam, Iron (the D44 used in XJs/MJs iirc)

Worth noting is that some Dakotas use a 6 bolt chryco 8.25 rear. I wonder if their width is the same, and if their brakes and axleshafts could be swapped onto an XJ 8.25 rear to go with a waggy dana 44 front swap? :dunno:

My 01 xj build sheet says I have a 181FBI, and it's a low pinion Dana 30. The spec in my 01 xj shop manual for the 186FBI has the same ring gear daimeter as the the 181FBI. I suspect that the 186FBI is the high pinion. Thanks for your help.

I would suspect that its the "super" 30 or Super3 maybe even a super4. Those were found on newer jeeps and basically they are just a tad wider in the carrier area (same bearings though) and use a shim set that goes between the housing and carrier race, not the typ D30 style where it goes between the bearing and carrier.

ok so going deeper in to my Dana books, yes the 186 = super 30 and what the newer jeeps come with, Grands, Liberty's, etc. Bascially only real change is what I mentioned.
