Pop noise

I have a 90 xj with a np231 transfer case and sye. The problem i have is while driving in 2wd under load there is a pop/bang noise intermittently.Checked rear diff and found spider gears were worn out,fixed that but noise still there. Can a stretched tc chain cause this noise ?

Only when in 4x4. Check the u-joints.

Check your motor mounts and make sure your U-bolts are torqued down.

Removed rear driveshaft and drove in 4w hi,noise still there and will also pop out 4w hi. Tried in 4w low,would not pop out of 4w low but the noise is there. Must be internal problem with t-case.

check all the u-joints in the front of the vehicle- drive shaft and axles. My front drive shaft did this same thing to me.

post deleted because it wasn't thought through properly and after i read it was a dumb question..

i agree about the joints needing to be checked though

After tearing down tc i found the shoes on range fork gone and gear hub had groved the range fork,also range synchronizer had some damage.Looks like trip to junkyard !
