..this is in the description from a 200k mile '92 XJ that I might consider purchasing - "when 4wd is engaged and you try to turn the wheel it grinds"

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Maybe the seller doesn't understand how the 4WD system works and thinks that the Jeep has a problem when it is actually working normally? If you throw a NP231 into 4WD and try to turn on dry pavement, it's going to talk back to you...

Agreed.

4WD needs loose surface / slippage potential, or it will "shudder". I'd take a look at this vehicle in person if you are interested.

But a bit of 4WD shudder is different than "grinding". Lots and lots of possibilities here.

If you do make a bid on this, be sure it is a lowball bid if you are unsure. If there is a potential issue, if the issue isn't serious, generally speaking, the owner will resolve them BEFORE selling it.
