Anyone know what the silver box with five wires is for under the drivers side dash board? I have one that melted and have no idea what it is used for. This item is not easy to get too

1999 XJ I-6 4X4 four door Auto trans I believe that the trans is AW-5 and is being replaced.

Trans would be AW4--Aisin Warner 4.
On a 1999, under the driver's side of the dash between the steering column and the right knee board should be the TCU--the transmission control unit.
If that is what is burned you likely have some serious issues.

Despite being misplaced, you did a much better job of describing your problem when you posted it up in Mod Tech. There's no need to post in both forums. I'm actually surprised it hasn't been deleted/moved here yet. Oh, and in case you never checked the other thread, it's your headlamp delay module...
