231 or 242 transfer case

Ok now confusion has set in, I am looking for a sye for my 242j transfer case and have found NOTHING. Is my transfer case the same as a 231 or what? If it is the same why the different numbers?

The only available options for a 242 SYE is known as a "hack and tap" SYE.

A heavy duty SYE for a 231 will not fit in a 242, and is known as heavy duty because it replaces the entire main shaft. Don't let the "hack" in the name fool you, there is nothing wrong with a H&T SYE, I ran 1 for 5 years and on 2 different case before I upgraded my transfercase.

Tom Woods has an SYE kit for the 242. Only one there is...

Yep, and that is essentially a hack and tap, you just remove your shaft, send it to him, and he does it on a lathe.

OP:
Go here, and select the appropriate SYE for your application (either pre '96 or post 96). Rubicon is not the only place that makes them, so feel free to shop around and see prices.
