What jeeps are most likely to have the 242 transfer case?

In addition to the "upscale" comment, you'll almost never find a 242 behind the 5-speed - look for 4.0L Autos.

My 89 Laredo with AW4 has it, also my wife's 92 Limited with AW4 has the 242

As mentioned previously, I think you had to have the AW4 to be able to order the optional 242

Agreed on the upscale versions having it. My buddy and I have near identical trucks but he has the towing package and he has the 242 while i`m still with the 231. :bawl:

My '91 laredo w/ tow package and auto has a 231. Is it really worth swapping?

Depends on what your plans are. If you see a lot of snow/ice, or let others drive your rig regularly, the 242 is a good option.

If you are more into wheeling your rig, the 231 has more upgrades available, and is a much simpler case.

I mostly find the NP242s in those XJs with the 2WD/4x4 PART TIME/4x4 FULL TIME/N/4 LO shift bezels, and mostly NP231s in those XJs with the 2H/4H/N/4L shift bezels. Hope that helps.
