So this morning the a/c compressor starts making a grinding sound napa want 240.00$ and advance wants 200.00$ rebuilt and exchange, u pullit wants 20.00$ best wishes. As much as i will miss a/c i dont have enough cash to throw at it. Is there a way to change belt to a shorter one to bypass the compressor until later or is there another poss solution?

Perfect time to give your BASICS--Year/engine.

There are a/c delete pulleys for SOME years, others you would either need a short belt or a factory a/c delete setup.

87-90 you need a factory setup, early-mid nineties there are cheap delete aftermarket setups, and the later XJs back to the factory delete.

Post up your BASICS and then we will see what info we can give you.

Good luck.

yeah, your only options would be to buy the $20 salvage yard compressor and use your current belt--you don't need to charge the system, just leave the clutch unplugged. That is probably your easiest and cheapest solution, as a short belt is going to run some bucks and you have to reroute things (search, there is probably a write up somewhere).

That would be cheaper, and probably easier, than locating a factory bracket and delete pulley from a salvage yard.

There aren't any aftermarket delete pulleys for your 98.

Good luck.
