Just out of curiosity, would a http://www.4wd.com/productdetails.aspx?jeep-sid=9&plID=0&partID=6778 fit in a '99 XJ? I have literally no clue as to how much space there actually is in the XJ engine compartment, so, could one fit a V8 in there?

Advance Adapters makes a mount kit for XJ and MJ to mount a Small Block Chevrolet (V8-305/350/400, typically) in there, and I've heard tell of people wedging a Big Block (V8-454) in there a couple of times. Other engines would be possible as well - I've been gathering data on physical engine sizes as research for Swappology.
Nearly anything can be done, if you're willing to do the work!

a 4.3 chevy out of an s10 or an astro would fit in there nice, lots of performance parts for em too. search here there's plenty of threads on the swap.
