Instead of writing, try calling them. I did that for my 86 and 89 and they faxed it right to me. Event they were amazed they still had it.

I also had good luck at the dealer. Took them my vin and they punched it in and I got back exactly what I asked for.

From what I understand the records AMC kept wouldn't work with the computer systems that Chrysler had and no one there figured it was worth the time effort to try and reconfigure all of the data to save the info, and since DC took over I wonder if the data even exists anymore. Maybe some dealerships though that have been Jeep dealers through all the ownership changes could still have the old systems and still have the info on file? It has been 20 years and 3 different parent companies since the XJ was introduced guys... Is there a history dept at DC? I know pontiac has one and they can get you a build sheet and window sticker for about anything.... that's real popular with the GTO and T/A crowd.

If you have a friendly (or even civil) dealer, take the VIN to the service department and ask them to run a build sheet.

I got one from a local Jeep service department for my '87. Pretty thorough, but with one or two questionable entries (codes that didn't carry through correctly . . . such as air bags being shown as being on my rig). Otherwise, pretty good. Took about 2 minutes.

The bottom of that page also gives state addresses to request a title history.

And then this on a Chrysler site, which gives a different address and says they will charge you a fee:

Service manuals for vehicles built from 1932 forward

Well, for sure they do not have records as far back as 1984. I know, because a friendly guy at DC Greece, run my VIN through their computer, and all he got back was that it was a 2.5 lt, 2-door model. Big help.

Not that I care about what equipment it had, when it left the factory, but maybe there is a recall for the carburated 2.5 lt engine, the T-5 gear box and the 207 transfer case. Some recall which would replace the above with a 4.0 lt HO, AX-5 and a 231!!!!!

Well this is what I come up with. Now becuase of the age of the jeep don't take all the options as the word from god. I know you don't have a 46RE Tranny. But some of the basic things should be right. Hope this helps
