Sure it is a MLM marketed product but you tell me what is so wrong w/ that?

Well I grew up in an Amway home and can go over a lot of product BS I was fed if you have the time.:) Also Nikken, Partylite, Shaklee, and Mary Kay, but thats nutrition, soap, cosmetics, wax and magnets.Maybe oil is different, I HAVE heard good things about Amsoil motor oil for quite a few years.

Anyway my local Pepboys also sells Mobil 1 gear oil, its the same price as the RP.The only reason I use the RP is because I was recommended it by a couple shops here in So.Cal. that do competition rock buggies.I am sure no expert when it comes to gear oil, so when it came time to start filling my own diffs I started checking places with good reputations in the rock crawling community and RP popped up.I just got a new Riddler D30 diff cover that I'm going to put on this week, and of course I need to go buy a couple more quarts, so what do you suggest, Mobil 1?, that Amsoil white paper does make RP look pretty bad.If I try the Amsoil gear oil, which one do you recommend?I'm in So.Cal and run in the desert and mountains. Also I have a Powertrax No-Slip in my D30.

For the price, Mobil 1 tests much better than RP so I would chose it over RP for sure. For desert running I would go w/ the Amsoil 75W140 Severe Gear though the 75W110 is working fine for me in all my Jeeps running all the time up here in the Mojave. Anyhow, whatever you run you can do much beter than RP for the price.

I'm always a little leary of 'independent laboratory' test of products on a manufacturers website, especially when its multi level marketing. Also RP gear oil is the cheapest at my local Pepboys, who sells cheaper/better gear oil than Royal Purple?

Right there is the reason, I refuse to use that white paper in my business....

I used Redline products for years when I was into drag racing. I have a VERY hard time swallowing the results in that paper.....

My wife did the Mary Kay, and the Partylite thing for a few years. It constantly fell on me to try and straighten out what she spent, made and its tax effects.

The marketing plan at AMSOIL is VERY different.... Try to become and Amway rep, or Mary Kay rep without joining someone else's downline. You can't do it....... With AMSOIL you can.

Most of your profits come are generated from you signing up new reps when you do Amway, Mary Kay, Prepaid Legal, etc. With AMSOIL there is a profit component from your downline, but you will much more money selling it for yourself.

You are going to see much more RP stuff out there. They spend a TON of marketing money getting their products places. AMSOIL spends marketing money, just not to that degree. RP now puts their products into the Mega-Chain parts places, AMSOIL doesn't. RP allows dealers to sell on E-Bay, AMSOIL doesn't(in fact the only online store allowed is the corporate one).

I have redline in it right now, only because it was given to me :D. It seems every year there's a new 'flavor' of oil everyone uses.

What Amsoil product would I use in my detroit loked rear?My detroit instructions say not to use synthetic gear oil.

I have had no problems using the 75W110 Severe Gear in my TruTrac equipped D30A or 75W90 in the Full Detroit equipped 9" Ford in my Stang or in my Detroit 12 bolt Gm rear in my old Buick.

I have an email in to Eaton to find out if they will explain Why they say "We do not recommend synthetic oil."

I would be interested in hearing that answer....
I have an ez-locker and run the 75w-140.

I wonder if its not an issue of over-slipperyness(homemade word)???

Amsoil was first synthetic motor oil to gain an API certification in 1972.....
Not really new.....

75w140 is for manual transmissions due to the high heat from the engine being so close to transmission. You waste your money and are really using the wrong lube if you put it in a diff. It's probable OK but just use the 75w90 or 110 for your diffs. As far as Amsoil goes it is great stuff if you can get past the marketing scheme and the website has some good info for learning about lubes. Moble one or RP are just easier to buy and just as good compaired to regular stuff. I posted this before but if you just read the first few pages you can pick up some interesting info:

X-2 The 75-140 oil will only reduce your gas mileage and in very cold weather, increase wear.

Coming from the guy living in California......

A 75w-140 will be EXACTLY the same as a 75w-90 in the cold weather....

Its when the fluid reaches warm operating temps it will be the same viscosity of a 140 fluid.

REply back from Eaton on Syn lubes in lockers.

"Dear John,

Thank you for your interest in Eaton differentials the actual Detroit
Lockers are fine with synthetic oils. The Truetracs on the other hand
should use mineral based gear lube. Like most limited slips, (generally
speaking) synthetic oils cause side effects from chattering to the loss
of efficiencies.

I hope this answers your question.

I'm calling bs though on syn in clutch posis as I run full syn w/ about 3 ounces of modifier in my factory trac-lock and it works great. I also use it in my Auburn too w/ no problems. I think it has more to do w/ whether or not it is formulated for posis OR you add some friction mod to it.
