Violently pulling to the left when breaking

Not necessarily.

A pinched hose or brake line, seized caliper or wheel cylinder, a brake pad that is hung up on a worn groove in the knuckle will prevent a brake from applying at all, and no heat or smell will occur.

You missed the first part of the scone sentence "if a brake was sticking." I agree with everything you said but it seems like everyone is jumping on the sticking brake issue which I can't see as a possibility at all for reasons already mentioned. I would go with a non working brake or steering well before we got to a pad stuck on a rotor.

Have you pulled the rear drums yet? My bet is either a worn through brake shoe or some oil on the shoe.

Contrary to what you would think, oil on a brake shoe will cause it to grab horribly, not slide.
