One observation...in town with the hatch open the tire carrier will swing out into traffic.

Yeah, i knew this before i had him make it that way... but for me the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

Good idea with the strut Jeeperjohn, i may do that.

There are a few set ups that have a spring loaded pin that'll latch when opened... then lift to release.

Thats what I'm going to do. I need to push mine All the way out into traffic to get the hatch to clear the spare when opening. But the issue is only on the street. So it's not much of an issue.
