Stock rear DS lengths...

Just curious, although it wont matter as soon as I do a SYE...


How many lengths do stock rear DS's come in? XJ_99 and I both just swapped in 8.25's and shorter stock driveshafts to replace turdy-5's and came up with an interesting find. We picked up 2 DS's off another member. One was 29" long, and one was 30.25".


My jeep is came with an AX15/231/d35 and the stock rear is 32.75", XJ_99's is AW4/242/D35 and was 31.75".


So far we are up to 4 different lengths. 2 of which we can confirm what they came out of.


Anybody want to help fill in the rest of this...? I'm not too worried about the pre H.O. tcase and transmission choices or 2wd as much as the 91-newer 4wd stuff.


Also, did the 242 ever come in an AX15 equiped Cherokee?


AW4/231/d35=
AW4/231/8.25=
AW4/242/d35= 31.75
AW4/242/8.25=
AX15/231/d35= 32.75
AX15/231/8.25=
AX15/242/d35=
AX15/242/8.25=


32.75" 31.75" and 30.25, 29" was still under XJ_99's at this time...

One of those shafts I gave to you must have came off of a AX-15/NP231/D44 I did an SYE on, then the other was a AW4/NP231/ 8.25. I'm not sure which one is which. Sorry for the confusion, they have both been sitting in the garage for awhile. I think some internet searching will give you the measurements you're looking for.

Thanks! I completely forgot about the D44 option as well! I wonder which has a longer snout to the pininon on it, the 44 or 8.25? That would tell me which one the shorter one came from!

Tony and I were able to get the right DS's on the right rigs. His took the one from you that was 30.25(tried the 29" first and only had about .85-1.1 inch of spline engagement at the SY) and mine actually used the 31.75" from his rig as the best option.

You also have the 2.5 auto and 5 speed option too. Both are longer then AW-4's DS with the 5 speed being the longest.
