speedo problem

i got a 96 xj the base modle and my seedo flops all over the place but rarly it will work but here is the thing wen it starts flopin my gas gauge ether goes all the way up or all the way down

any places i should start

Often this will be the plug from the gauge pod to the dash. You have to pull the pod and clean the contacts.
