In order to avoid all the problems with broken shock nuts/bolts I have just taken my 4 shock bolts out on my 93 XJ, greased the threads and put them back in. Getting them out I was very careful and followed the advice of first tightening a bit, then loosening a bit and so on, together with plenty of WD40 this worked. Hopefully if I need to take them out in the future there should not be any problem!
