I know that one of my buddies I met last year when I moved to college worked in the machine shop I believe for Cree (the LED manufacturer) in the Raleigh area, made $16/hr plus time and a half overtime, and he always got overtime. That's without graduating yet too, he's going for Mechanical Engineering Technologies. I think that's about a 3 hour drive from Uwharrie.
As for wheeling there is a new place that just opened up in my hometown (Vale) called Leonard Hills Farm, it's about an hour from Charlotte and the wheeling is awesome. Then as others have mentioned there's the Gulches in Laurens also
