Re: Important

It's stored in NAXJA as a JPEG. Yet another indication that something is rewriting the image on the way through.

If it's coming in to you as a 1x1 GIF, someone upstream from you, probably your ISP, is running a poorly configured caching proxy server.

Weird... This is through wifi, same internet connection as my laptop.

Re: Important

Tethered? Good test.
Sending this Tethered, using Verizon Internet. (you can check the IP)
Does the same thing. Tried FF and IE.

Viewed Post 39467 with my phones browser instead of Tapatalk, it doesnt show up there either. Thats on Verizon 3G.

<scratches head> I'm having a hard time keeping this all straight.

You've got at least 2 separate Internet connections, your wired landlines and your cellphone data plan.

You've got a browser in your phone, on your computer, and your mother's computer.

I see at least 5 separate tests to be performed, viewed the problematic post (full refresh every time:)

1) Your computer, landline connection.
2) Your computer, tethered to your cellphone connection.
3) Your phone's browser, on it's cellular connection
4) Your phone's browser, on your WiFi through your landline connection.
5) Your mother's computer, on it's landline connection.

Make sure you clear browser cache before changing connections on a device, otherwise an earlier successful test can mask a later unsuccessful test.

That's right.

I will try it all again tomorrow and pm the results in an easier to understand form...

Come to think of it..... rather than using a web browser, let's think about using wget (http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/wget.htm for windows, Linux usually loads it by default.) No caching, and easy to determine exactly what's coming down.

Now just wait a froggin' minute.... Firefox 15 on Ubuntu just returned a 1x1 GIF (http://naxja.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=156&pictureid=2482.)
This is leaving NAXJA as a 1x1 GIF89a image. Time to dig down into the vBulletin stuff. Something definitely ain't right.

Re: Important

I think I have referrers and cookies turned off...
*WAIT*. Referrals may be the problem.

wget, executed directly against the picture link, returns a 403, permission denied, error, however, if it's requested as part of a page, i.e. the referral field is filled in, it does come back. Oddly enough, according to my wireshark traces this morning, it is getting sent down as a GIF, not a JPEG. I'll add the referral field to a wget request in a minute, that should succeed.

Re: Important

Nope. Referrals ain't the problem. vBulletin also seems to try rather hard to not allow use of wget.

BTW, here's a better wireshark display filter technique:
http.request.uri contains "2482"

That'll filter out the HTTP request packet where the request contains 2482 (picture ID of the Stella & poker chips image.)

Re: Important

So, what have I figured out this morning....

1) wget ain't that useful for vBulletin testing.
2) direct picture access is also usually not allowed.
3) Right-clicking on the image, and selecting View Image (Firefox) succeeds.
4) Copying the URL from #3, opening a new window/tab, pasting the URL fails.

I'm going to have to pull a wireshark trace from #3 and #4 and compare the HTTP request, byte by byte.

see why I was just willing to let it go?
I knew it would be PITA to track down.

I'll get you some HTTP packet infor later tonight. I'm off with the metal detector to find property pins right now.

I shouldnt of mentioned it... lol

Ive tried these with the same results (no image):

  1. Firefox on my computer/DSL
  2. IE on my computer/DSL
  3. Firefox on my moms computer/DSL
  4. Firefox on my computer/Verizon 3G
  5. IE on my computer/Verizon 3g
  6. Firefox at my friends house on his computer/DSL (never been to Naxja)
  7. My phone browser on 3G
  8. My phone browser on Wifi/DSL
My phone through tapatalk loads the images, through Wifi/DSL OR 3g.
