Looking to join Naxja - Moved to CLT NC, no garage, need service help

There is the thought/consideration of a flog over here. IE Gulches or URE. Tim if there was one would you go then or is it still a funds thing?

Depending on what's going on, I'd be down for riding along and lending a helping hand. It sounds like a good time to me, and I'm pretty easy going.

I would have had no idea! So, Dutch John, Falls Dam, Rocky Mountain Loop, Sawmill, Slab Pile, Uwharrie hunt camp, and Wolf Den are all OK on a pretty much stock 4X4 XJ?

Any recommendations between that bunch on what to try first? Again, I really, really, can't afford breaking anything right now. I'm supporting my wife through school right now on a PT job and expensive rent and car payments. I'd like to see some scenery and try this thing out, without going down the slippery slope!

I wish I could convince my wife to camp, and my brother hadn't broken my tent. Are there certain times of the year that swimming is recommended? I'm guessing June, July, August?

Thanks again for the advice. We went up to Crowder's Mountain for some hiking last weekend and had a great time. Although we wore ourselves out and my wife realized her running shoes gave zero ankle support on the way down!

Ha oh yeah I forgot Dutch John. That's a D. The easiest you can start out on is coming in Wolf Den-Falls Dam-either FS road or Dickey Bell-Rocky Mtn Loop-Slab Pile and back out Wolf Den. Conditions change on trails and I can't remember if the nasty hill climb on Dickey Bell is on the long section or the short jog between where it crosses the FS road and intersects Rocky Mnt Loop. The best way to see URE for the first time really is with a experienced guide. Not only can we show you the trails, but its proper to ride in a group and if there is a mechanical or carnage, we WILL get you out and fixed (it will most likely be Ghost or I breaking something though).

Camping- Sleep in the back of your XJ and make your brother figure his own deal out! Can't really comment on the wife part... I'm not very successful in that arena!

Swimming- The water is a mountain stream, it's cold no matter what! Warm air temp is your friend. I waded in shorts in June/July.

Hiking- Mid height boots are a great compromise, but no boot will offer total protection. Best injury prevention for hiking is to "train" for it. Start with less technical trails and lower mileage and work your way up. This becomes exponentially important when planning on carrying a pack. I swapped out my mid-heights for ankle cut trail runners years ago and love the freedom, but I log some serious miles per year unless I'm stuck in suburbia hell. Crowder's is nice! Been there a couple times luckily in off-peak times so it didn't live up to it's name. Check out South Mtn some time.

I'm out of commission till after this weekend. Planning a work weekend around the house shop to get both jeeps up to snuff. If you want to come check out the shop and hang out Saturday shoot me a pm. I'll likely be doing a mix of stuff and hopefully talking the GF into cleaning up my new shop table while I put a starter on Ghost. Assuming I get the exhaust done on Greenie before then.

I did ure in a stock height LWB MJ with street tires on it.

yes, you can bomb around there for a weekend in a stock XJ.

Trail conditions have changed slightly since then old man! For the majority of the place its still true but there are a couple difficult areas. We saw Glenn's best driving to date in a rotted stock XJ with inverted leafs at URE. No damage to the XJ other than the exhaust jumping out of the rear mount, but that magically repaired itself 100 yards from the trailer.

Thanks! That was a magical weekend! LOL!

just because I haven't been in ten years doesn't make me old.

being a grumpy old man makes me old.

Haha, you guys are hilarious. A bunch of cranky, hard-time giving Jeep lovers!

I'm broke as a joke right now, but am applying to FT jobs. So when I get that FT job I'll be jumping back into the Jeep stuff again. I can lend someone a hand somewhere if they're close to Charlotte when I have a weekend free.

Hey you need to post up what you got with pictures because we all know jeep porn rocks! UNCC aka Tim is a good guy. I might be hitting him up real soon for some advise opinion on my 98 that my 16 year old claims there is a problem with. He and I just need to work out what Saturday works for him and me...... :)

Careful with Tim. He'll just push you to cut your fenders and get bigger tires.

A little late, but welcome!!! I'm in Charlotte, University City area, so I'm about 15-20 minutes from you. I only have basic hand tools as well but simple stuff I'll be glad to lend a hand on. My XJ is currently down, so I'm driving my stock ZJ. I'm planning on going to the Uwharrie jamboree in October. Any time you wanna go just give me a holler, as long as I have fuel funds and little to no homework I'm more than happy to go down there. It's only an hour from me. Basically if I'm in the ZJ you can do whatever I do, I refuse to beat up my DD. It'll be another story once I fix the XJ haha

I still remember the day we cut Tim's fenders. He held out for quite awhile! It took backing into a tree for him to fully give in. Best time at poser rock EVAR!

Y'all cut them at URE?? Haven't heard that story!!!

No didn't cut them at URE. Cut them I think prior to this trip, but tried to keep the stock flares relocated. Josh tried to flop his junk and Tim backed into a tree within a matter of minutes. After that trip Tim gives no fux and cuts his fenders all the way and no longer cares about dents.

I guess we heckled him long enough that he gave in.

So who's going to show up on the Saturday when I finally decide to cut mine???? By the way Jonner this is typically how our SEC works..... hey look a squirrel

Ahh gotcha, I've heard about Josh trying to let his Jeep take a nap. In the picture I saw the only thing holding him up was Andy, sounds like a hell of a time on that trip!!!

Perhaps it's time we teach him how to work on a vehicle. Especially if he's going to be driving a Jeep.

I gave in to peer pressure, now it's my job to make others give in as well :)

It's amazing how quickly things go downhill after the first dent.

I even knew that damn tree was there too. Not 30 seconds prior my buddy said "hey there's a tree there, watch out."

I guess we heckled him long enough that he gave in.

You still take the cake for backing into a tree. Mine didn't require an entire hatch replacement :)

There's too many people from the MWC that want to see this happen, you're going to have to wait until the next Crawl!
