Looking at an XJ tomorrow--What should I focus on?

If the a/c need to be recharged it is more than likley due to a leaky evaporator. Very common and about $1000 to repair unless you are up for a challenge.

Well, I just checked out the 95 Cherokee. He just put in a new clutch--including master cylinder. The brakes were done not too long ago, and a new radiator was put in 1 year ago. It was clean, and did drive well, However, there were a few problems:

* It was a little "jerky* when accelerating in first and second gears. The others seemed fine. I am thinking a vacuum leak somewhere--especially considering the blower would only blow air up into the windshiled area--a permanenet defrost situation.

* Rattling underneath--sounds like loose exhaust.

* Needs new tires--tread pretty thin on these.

* Cracked windshield--actually fairly common around here.

* It di have minor bodywork done when they got sideswiped by a DUI-- nothing major, though.

* Headlights only work in high beam--owner thought it was related to the bodywork done.

* It was wet [oily] on the bottom of the front part of the tranny--no dripping, though.

*It only has idiot light--I would have to install gauges. Not too difficult, I think.

****That seems to be the major problems. Other than that, it seemd to drive/ride great, and looks good, too. Not overly worn carpet/seats, undercarriage looks fine [no rust], body and paint ok, etc. There are, of course, some minor things, like the rear-view mirror coming loose, rear wiper only working in "wash" mode, and not also in "wipe" mode.

* Rear wiper only works in "wash" mode, and not in "wipe" mode.

He wants $2800 obo. What think you??

A friend of mine worked at a Jeep dealership for 15 years and says the easiest way to drop the pan on an XJ is to take the tranny mount in the rear loose and jack the tranny up, you will have plenty of clearence.

I agree it's a great deal. BUT--we are looking for a four door Cherokee. Trust me--we need it. I did check out that site, and that is where I tested the last one I posted about above.
