key sensor? whats wrong?

i believe my key immobilizer sensor is starting to go bad. sometimes i will be driving and my tach and speedo arent reading and the light is on. well today i tried to start it and it would run for about 3-4 secs then shut off??? i did this about 12 times before it started then it ran fine all the way home(20miles). should i use my spare key and see if its the sensor in my current key or is it the actual module? if it is how do i fix it? thanks a lot guys! sorry about the long story

If it's the key, plan on spending about a hundred bucks to have a key remade. Also, make sure you bring along your registration and VIN# for proof of ownership.

If it's the computer, plan on selling the XJ and buying something new. Post it for sale on this forum.
