Homemade Selectable Snorkel (PICTURES SAY 1000 WORDS)

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh is really all i have to say. We all have seen someone come in here and every other forum with pretty much the same half cocked idea on how they made their homemade snorkle..... Sweet, a hose and filter. but seriously think to yourself at this point (and im not trying to squash your ideas just a thougth) why are you trying to re-invent the wheel, when at first your comback to this idea way "how much did you spend on your ARB??"

mine to you after 3 pages is "how much time and effort or time at Lowes did you spend?" at this rate you are going over the price anyone else paid for a snorkle that works with 0 valves and 1 filter, not $20 worth of valves, $50 on filters and $50 on plumbing parts. Terribly overthinking it

I can't speak for HaZ, but for me it's the satisfaction of figuring out somthing for youself as opposed to buying something someone else thought up, even if it's not the perfect design. The fun is not so much saving $$ (although that is pretty cool) but it's building something that's your own. If that's not your thing, then go buy what you want and go wheeling.

I know this is an old thread but this inline filter caught my eye. Its fairly cheap..

That may be the longest listing I have ever seen on Ebay

To be honest with you, I spent all of $60 and maybe 3 hours designing and building this. I would have to say it was well worth the effort. The main cost was the filters.

Question...Has anyone ever seen a selectable or automatic snorkel system other than this one? If so, can you point me in the direction of where it was you saw it. Has anyone ever seen any motor (generators, compressors, military equipment, ect...) that have multiple air intake entry points?

Thanks

I do have a question in regards to pictures 10-11
What was the purpose of welding the craftsman 3/8's ratchet into the corner of the cage?
Or am I seeing great camoflage and you do use it when needed?
Maybe an expensive gussett?

These were broken ratchets laying around my garage and I welded them in to represent the blood and sweat that went into building this Jeep. Basically, this Jeep was my first engineering experience. I discovered my passion for engineering field though building this Jeep. I am currently very close to finishing a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering technology with a minor in mathematics because of this passion. Even though I am unable to put alot of money into doing everything the "Correct way", I have still gained a wealth of knowledge from much experience by trail and error.

any pics of the rattle can filter? need to see

As I mentioned in my last post, I really don't have the time or money to do everything the "correct way". I try to think of ways to spend as little $ as possible yet get a system that works pretty good.

I change the filter in this system before every off-road trip (which is all I use the XJ for anymore). I can get probably 50 filters out of 1 stock filter.

Props to you, HaZakated, for thinking outside the box. You gave me some great ideas to do a snorkel on my junk. I love cheap, effective mods that make people wonder what the hell we were thinking.

Now if only Shwarzenegger would quit warming the globe so much by flying his private jet everywhere, we'd actually get a little rain here in Cali. to justify building a snorkel. :nono:

Definately not hatin' on innovation....but by cutting up a filter and using a small part of it, you don't have NEARLY enough surface area...one of three things will happen, it will suck dirt thru the piece of filter, or it will suck around the filter, or it will suck the filter out....if the engine was carburated, it wouldnt go a mile without fuel fouling the plugs at any engine speed much over an idle.

 so... Lemme get this straight. For the intent of "Cheapness" You built up a 'Snorkel' Out of household ABS, and elected to include an underhood filter on a 2" Ball valve so you could.... Suck in hot underhood air in constricted amounts, as well....? And the "Shroud/intube filter" Thing.... Er... Wow.... "Advanced fab" You say....

I am going to build something like this but incorpoate a watertrap and run it throught the firewall into the cowl area and through the cowl, Thanks for the ideas!!!

Looking at this design a year later, I wonder what the purpose of having the underhood filter is for if you have the snorkle too?

I definately agree on the small surface area of the new filtering design too.

fluid mechanics? talk about terrible flow... that convoluted tube on the outside of the A-pillar... the awesome angle from air entering only through the snorkel... :looser:

as for your keeping water out during a 2 hour under lake rescue... make sure you never shut the motor off, or have any exhaust header leaks... exhaust valves don't like fighting water... and if your jeep leaks even a drop of oil - then where oil comes out, water is likely to go in...

come on man... how use full is this thing really?

out of the box - sure... nice attempt...

get back to studying fluid mechanics - and after you've learned about pipe roughness and how making things flow around corners sucks... come back and talk more...
