I don't know what's wrong. Maybe you can help as I don't even know where to start. I've got a 88 XJ with the 4.0. It's 100% stock. The only thing that's been done in the last year (since I've owned it) are changing the plugs and oil. I also replaced the alternator when it went out along with the serpentine belt while I was at it. It leaks quite a bit of oil, but I keep a check on it.
So, here's what happened. I drove about 300 miles (150 one way and then back.) On the way back I noticed some vibration but figured it was just bad tires and poor roads. About 20 miles from home I pulled off for gas and as I slowed to a stop I hear "KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK...." Scared the crap out of me. Without much choice I gassed up, added a quart and 1/2 of oil and headed home. (Let's not discuss if that was a poor choice or not. I made it home.)
The sound speeds up as mph increase and about 50mph it turns into a vibration and no knocking. Also it seems that at lower speeds it goes away in curves.
I'm not a mechanical genius when it comes to diagnosis. Where do I start?
Thanks ahead of time.
