Over the years I've had two dist. sieze and snap their drives, varnish build up in the housings.
If his snapped, why does he have to get somebody to crank the motor over to verify?
Why can't he just take the cap off and spin the rotor by hand? If it spins freely then I'd say the shaft snapped.
