that works for me. should all 4-wheel drive vehicles be towed this way as a general rule (i am sure their will be some exceptions)?

It varies between the 4x4 setup. Its best to refer to how a manufacturer wants it towed. Especially in situations where the transfer case has a VC.

I flat tow my 89 all the time with a 242 t-case in neutral and auto trans in park. Sometimes for hundreds of miles at a time. 213k on the odo. This way I can tow it behind my motorhome to where I want to go wheeling. Everything still works in great condition. I also removed the lock pin in my steering column so I do not have to have the ignition on. I pull the key out and lock the doors.

Thats the way to do it. If you notice the majority of vehicles behind motor homes are Jeeps, at least what I have seen. Probably because they are so easy to setup for towing and fairly small.
