That probably is refering to the bolts retaining the shaft to the yoke. The yoke nut on the case is probably more like 130 ft/lbs. I don't know the actual spec, but it is similar to a pinion nut in size and function. The nut just clamps the output brg. between the yoke and the front sprocket. You aren't going to hurt anything, I always use an impact and it probably ends up 150 or better ft/lbs.
The 4 bolts that hold the CV joint to the yoke on the TC are 14 ft lbs.The bolt in the center that holds the yoke on is 30 ft lbs in my book,which I thought was light.
Most just hold it with a pipe wrench and hit it with the impact.

OK, I had to go out in the -10F garage and find my manual. 97 TJ FSM says 90-130 ft/lbs. for the 231. Should be the same on all of them. That clear it up??
