I'll try that this afternoon just to be safe but i have had others come out and listen to the engine. Everyone seems to think the engine sounds good. But it can't hurt to try.

when i bought my 92'xj it had the same problem with the bell housing noise..turned out the torque converter was just loose on three of the four bolts.saved me ton of cash..

Just to put this to rest. The banging noise came from the starter. The gear wasn't retracting.

Glad you found the problem and actually posted it. Many people just find the problem but don't post it. Did you replace the starter or just grease it up?

I just swapped in a used one that Tom had laying around. 10 min swap and no more problems. 750 miles on the rebuilt engine!!!
