Well, it's been a little while, but if you want to see the 6BT in action...

Nice work... looks like the camber in the TTB front end is a bit off.

Yes....but it's not TTB. It's a HP44 straight axle, and there are known issues with the balljoint inclination angle getting messed up with certain combinations of knuckles and inner-C's (which in this case is a '79 HP44 with '82 Chevy 10-bolt 8-lug outers). It's fixable by using angled shims behind the spindles, but we've got a HP60 to put in there instead.

Doh! My apologies. I didn't look closely and assumed it was just another fawked up TTB.

Wouldn't have fit without a body lift in a Bronco, these things are really tall. Not sure about an XJ/MJ compartment. I think we're getting another 6BT shortly, and I may try in use it in my '79 full-size 2-door cherokee tow rig build up...

I'm guessing there would be no way to fit one without a body lift in a Grand Waggy either.

Anyone know better?

Probably not. Biggest issue we ran into was firewall vs. front axle. I'm not sure how the engine compartment and axle are positioned in a FSJ vs. a Bronco though. If we set it in low enough to clear the firewall without the body lift, then the oil pan was basically sitting on the diff. If the axle is further forward or the firewall is higher on the jeep it might work, but either way these motors are TALL.

Too bad. Hard to build a sleeper with a mondo body lift on it.

There was some posts at ifsja.org about putting a GM 6.2 in a FSJ. If you go turbo, and with a 6.2 you'd really want to, the turbo assembly (IIRC) interferes with the firewall (or heater box or something - forget).

It sounds doable though.

But, given a choice between a 6BT and GM6.[2,5]... Well, body lift , eh?

heres some of my diesel swap links

to answer the question i used to have a bookmark (but lost my bookmarks after a certain date for some reason ) with a 6BT in a full size cherokee or wagoneer i think it was on turbodieselregistry. If you search or ask on there someone will know the link i bet it if is on another site.

All this talk of diesels into XJs and FSJs has made some mental gymnastics needed to be fed by Google.

I did some digging and stumbled across a Cummins 6AT engine:

its a 3.4L inline 6 that puts out about 120hp and 230lb ft. ... its also way smaller than a big cummins. it is designed to directly replace a chevy 250 inline 6

It has a standard SBC bell pattern supposedly.

Some interesting dimensions here:

http://visualizit.com/BlueYJ/engines.htm

What i've read of the 4BT is that it is too tall to fit in a XJ properly.

According to the above page, the Jeep 4.0 is 28.5 inches tall.

The VM Motori 2.8 (KJ) is 26.85 inches tall.

So, if we knew how tall the 6AT was we'd have some info regading whether it is worth looking into farther (IMO).

Here's a couple pages with images/info of the 6AT going into TLCs:

The 6AT almost looks like a "normal" engine from an external looks and size point of view.

I haven't been able to find dimensions for the 6AT.

According to "Practical Engine Swapping" by John Thawley, the Chevy 250 is

weight: 410 lb

length: 30.5"

height: 25.5" or 29" depending on which measurent (top intake versus air cleaner)

width: 16" (23.5" including exhaust manifold)

This book has been wrong before.

Hmm...

I posted 6bt dimensions about 4 years ago when I wanted to do a diesel swap. They are WAY too tall to fit under the hood, and have decent compression room for the front axle.

Nice swap, VetteBoy. A 6bt would be lovely in my F-250.
