Convert a desk lamp to LED

I am making a table lamp, from a table lamp. Instead of the regular light and housing I am going to use an old bike light, but I want to use LEDs instead of the 3.5 watt bike bulb. How can I convert the standard Edison plug to power an LED light, enough to work as a reading lamp?

I have some basic skills but know absolutely nothing about LEDs, transformers, etc. So any specifics would be great.
