Not so.

The final body design was determined in a "competition" between AMC, Renault, and Guigiaro. Renault DID bring some needed technology to the table via their engineering relationship with Peugeot and Volvo.

During that transition period, AMC/Renault built "automobiles" badged as Renaults, that alone would be the reason for "Renault" being added to the marketing tools. I don't recall the word "Renault" ever having been used in conjunction with marketing any Jeep, including the XJ.

In any case, the association with Renault definitely had a lot to do with the development of the XJ, clearly the most versatile vehicle ever produced. IMHO
