I just went through this same scenario a few months ago with my recently purchased 2000 w/212k miles. It would drive fine for a few miles and then no power. Shut it down wait a few minutes and it would drive for a few more miles and then no power again. Finally figured out it was the trans filter was clogging and the fluid was toast.
I replaced the filter and filled with new fluid. Took it for a drive and seemed the problem was fixed. Nope, only increased the miles it would drive before no power. 50% new fluid w/ 50% dirty fluid is still dirty fluid. Even after two more "drain and repeat" cycles the problem would still come back. I finally did the process above and there was still a load more dirty fluid I pumped out with the flush. That was 2k miles ago with zero issues since.
