Aussie locker noise?

man i've never had a problem with my aussie . i've installed 4 . all work great . well except for one . ford 8.8 in a tj . my buddy desided to power up a hill and ended up jumping ...tj landed hard on rear axle . aussie started unlocking/locking ....it had busted a few teeth off the locker . aussie replaced with no quetions .

my xj has started making a sound from the front that sounds just like what your saying ....i thought i had a axle joint bad . both check out good , i then checked the gear thinking it might have broke . it's good too . the aussie ...it checks out fine too ...... so i don't know ??????? but i did find that my t-case is busted all along the front .straight up and down by the yolk . i'm hoping my case was flexing causing the poping .

I do know on sharp turns to the left mine also binds more and it alot louder. I just don't turn that sharp = problem solved, lol.

I was told on some Jeeps the inner axle shaft needs to be trimmed aa hair to solve this, ohh well.

That wouldn't be a problem to fix, it only takes about 30 min to tear down and pull the carrier. Is there a write up on the axle trim? Is that the left or right or both that have to be trimmed?

I have one but in the rear (d35) just put it in and have only 20 miles on it. Not loud at all. Makes as much noise as my factory LSD that was worn out. I really dont notice it other than the more grip it has. I love it!! Cant wait till i take it off road. Hope ya get your problem fixed.

Bump!

Anybody know anything about trimming the axle shaft to prevent binding with a Aussie+D-30

Would love to see a write up or just some more advice?

Just one question, did it pass the spin test when you were finished?? And I am doing quite a bit of searching to see if anyone else had this problem and about shortening the axle thing.

Im having the same clunky sound around tight turns. the funny thing is it dose not happen on the trail in 4wd. Im running a Lockrite. Thinking it might be affecting my ujoints and fr DS. all are loose on my 2000 With only about a dozen or so real trail runs.

I have had mine in fro well over 1K miles and the pervious owner had probably 2K or better on it and it makes a clunking when I am turning hard but I just deal with it. Some do that and some don't. It doesn't affect my ride quality or the driveability of the rig any so I don't worry about it. If you don't like the noise it make then spend the money and get an ARB. Then you only have to worry about the noise on the trail. Just my thoughts.

Yes, It passed all of the pre-run tests, all gaps are in spec in the locker.

My Aussie in my D30 is not too bad, but offroad you can hear a lock of clicking and stuff when the tire loses grip and the other locks. Also, when im going in reverse making a turn, like getting into a parking spot, it gets REAL loud..

Doesent bother me though, as im getting ARB this fall when I build my 44 front.

However, the Aussie is a great locker.

Another update.

After completely rechecking everything in the front axle housing, even rechecking my gear set-up that I did on it a year ago, everything checks good.

So I decided to swap in my trail spare axle shafts and presto! Noise is much better. Still know its there but it is only a 1/8 as loud as it was.

The only thing I can figure is that the shafts that I had in there even though they had new 760's and unit bearings, must have been binding some. The ones I took out will be fine for spares and the ones that are in there are all new so I'm good to go!

I hope this thread helps others out with the same/similar problems.

Yeah it has to do with the shafts for sure, mine is quite loud on sharp turns and in 4wd, but ohh well it installed correctly. I may get some alloy shafts soon anyways and hopefully it will help.

Installed one in a YJ very quiet, d oone in another XJ and its just like mine.

Just a thought, did you replace the unit bearings too with the shafts?? I know some people carry spares with the unit bearings on the shafts. If you did, maybe it was the bearings making the noise?

Yes, I keep the bearings on my shafts(less work on the trail) but all 4 of the bearings are brand new, as well as my 760x joints. The caps are welded on both sets of shafts.

Now that's just strange. How could it be the shafts themselves??

Update.

After about 800 miles and one hard day of wheelin' it is still noisy but I can live with it

The performance off road is excellent, I wish I had one in the 8.25 instead of the TruTrac.

The front locker drug my heep through stuff that 30" tires and only 3.5" lift should not have gone through.

If you can live with the noise get the Aussie.

Bumping an old thread and I know the OP is still around,

Did you ever come up with a final solution for this? Mine makes the exact same racket that yours did/does. I'm wondering if it might have something to do with the WJ swap messing with the length of the shafts.

Mine's not the Aussie, it's a Spartan but it's the same exact setup. It's installed correctly and the U-joints and bearings are all new.

Any thoughts?

I went through this a bit a go-see my thread? Anyways it IS FINE!!! Mine - rear XJ 44 - made a noise when I first put it in-sounded like a shaft and spring pin broke-took cover off- no problems-It does make a LOUD CLANG!!! Now and again it has 6,000 miles on it now-Funny this morning I got on the high way and at about 55 Mph/3000 Rpm I shifted into 5th gear-nv3550- and it went bang!!! and shifted my truck over 1 ft!!!! YUP it Works!!!!!!! 4.88 gears Dana 44 BFG A/T 35's....
