Anyone Else stuck in Pop-Up Hell??

Running windows XP. Internet explorer 6. Fine until recently. Now bombarded with non stop crap. I have Mcafee VirusScan, and a program called SpySubtract. SpySubtract removes lots of junk, but still the pop ups. Reminds me of my early days on the internet when AOL used to do that to me.

Anyone find a solution that worked for them?

Thanks,

Tom

I am in Pop-up hell. Hope to find something out too....

Yeah, tried lavasoft's AdAware. It could not remove whatever is causing all of this. What really bugs me about this whole thing is that these hacker-theives collect your personal information ad then sell you to companies under the guise of "Internet Advertising". SPAM still smells like SPAM no matter what color you spray on it.

Ever tried following the origin of any of these pop ups? They are multi million dollar companies.
Here are some links to the "Ad- Serving" companies:

http://www.adserver.com November 1 - Fastclick.com, Inc., announced it has completed a $75 million Series A round led by Highland Capital Partners and Oak Investment ( from their site)

http://www.adrevolver.com AdRevolver, the next generation ad-serving technology company, is pioneering the way advertising is delivered on the Internet. With several scientists in its develop arm, specializing in linguistic analysis, artificial intelligence and behavioral patterns, AdRevolver is becoming a leader in ad-serving solutions worldwide. With a successful launch in Europe, AdRevolver clients include MTV Latin America, MSN International, as well as various other prominent International websites. Makes me sick.

I´ve been constantly tweaking and filtering, + ad-aware, no pop ups, but my spam filters, filter out a lot of the e-mail I want, from friends, relatives and business correspondance. I find myself going to the trashcan more and more looking for replys to my e-mails. Feast or famine.

i use firefox as a web search engion it is the best for elimination pop ups. i have also found that ad-daware se is the best for removing spy boots on your comp.

I know you don't want to hear this but the only way to absolutley, positively fix the problem is do the following:
Download Firefox
Download spybot search and destroy, Don't be fooled by sould alike names either, it's spybot search and destroy and is free.
Download Thunderbird
Download AVG anti virus, get the key they send you and print it out or buy the personnel version, it's very good for the price.
Copy those files to a USB key or cd rom
Backup your important files, ones that you NEED. Email addresses, contact info, etc.
Export your bookmarks to a text file and edit it manually, delete any that are hidden in there that you have no idea where they came from.
Disconnect the system from the internet, unplug the friggin network cards RJ45 connector.
WIPE THE MACHINE which means reformatting the hard drive, delete the partition and recreate it then reformat it.
Keeping it disconnected from the internet reformat the hard drive and install your OS.
Plug your PC into a hardware firewall/router, SMC7xxxx, netgear, etc.
Install Firefox, thunderbird, avg and spybot
reboot
Connect to the internet and update AVG, spybot search & destroy
At this point it is pretty safe to use Internet Explorer to connect to the microsoft update site ONLY and do the updates. Disable spybot, right click on the icon in the system tray, only during the MS updates then once they are all finished reboot and allow spybot to run from then on.
Import the bookmarks file into firefox by using <file><import><bookmarks.txt> file.
Install all your applications again, Office, project, etc.
From then on use ONLY firefox for a browser. You will have to download adobe, flash and all the other plug in's but firefox will prompt you for them as needed. Use IE only for sites that specifically require IE because the company that develped the web site was stupid and hired developers who can't write html according to the standards and bought into the MS BS line.
Configure Thunderbird as your mail reader and don't use outlook or outlook express ever again.
If you are smart you will at this time plug in an external USB drive or second hard drive, boot with a norton ghost boot floppy and image all that work to the extra drive, then unplug it and remove the power to it. Do that on a regular basis and you can always get your system back to the point you last did an image backup.
This will almost guarantee you a troublefree PC provided you don't go looking for trouble, IE: surfing porn sites and sites that offer 'free' screen savers, free icons, free whatevers or eye candy. Nothing is free and if it is it is almost as sure as god made little green apples it's going to have some kind of negative code in there that you wont know about...
Just my opinon, I make money fixing these kinds of problems so take it for what it's worth.
Just a note, it generally takes the virus boxes and spyware scanners about 8-10 minutes to find an open PC on the internet and infect or download their payload which means while you are downloading the newest AV and spyware the bad stuff is already going in. An open PC I define as a pc that has no current av software or firewall installed. I expect to get real busy in the next week or two cleaning up all those new cheap ass dell and gateways xmas PC's that booted onto the new cable modems we have.

A little overboard, but for some people that is what it takes.

I disagree on *not* using Outlook though. The last version is pretty darned good IMHO.

Yeah, Outlook has been good and I haven't had problems with it yet. Was gonna DL Thunderbird, but haven't had cause to yet.

By running an ad-aware program and a spysweeper program will eliminate most files that are dropped by worms or spyware. Also if you install msn toolbar it will block most pop-ups, but you will have to train it for the websites you frequently visit! Also if you download Tune-up utilities and configure it to your system, it will help in the cleaning of your registry.

Not if you take the defaults the first time you fire it up it isn't... ever try to get the concept of what an attachment is to non or semi literate pc people or explain filters to that same audience. 30 minutes explaining and when I ask 'any questions' I get 'But why don't I want to open attachments, how else can I tell if they are important or not' or 'what if it says it's from my brother/sister/mother/father' why would they send me a virus' arrrrrrrgh....

Here are a couple of sites:

Do a dejanews search for 'cwshredder' run with care though....you may have to rename it, some of the trojans will recognize it as soon as you download it to your hard drive and I've even seen two trojans actually block the download by freezing IE.

Yup, I deal with it all the time. That is a problem that no email client can help though. If a User opens it, they open it. Outlook is pretty darned good at handling that. Outlook Express with the Preview Pane enabled is another story. Each to his own though. I prefer Outlook and have my local customers use it. Very rare that a problem comes up, the defaults in the newer versions are much improved.

Easy way, start, run, regedit, file, export. I save it to a 256meg USB key on a regular basis before EVERY software install... alot of other stuff I keep on a bunch of 512 and 1gig usb keys I got as handouts at different shows..
