After 70 years, mystery solved...

That's awsome. I was just there earlier this year :) I figured it was something along those lines.

I just work on airplanes. Nothing big.

I was out there last January, but I think all the big stones were in the water, only small stones a couple inches across were visible

Thanks, I try to take decent pictures!

That was a VERY long night. We started on the north end at Big pine about 10 AM, after dirt roads running the length of death valley, passed racetrack playa there. Then after going down Lippincott we got blocked by snow trying to get up out of Saline Valley toward Panamint Springs, right at sunset, and had to put the 5 gallon gas can into my tank. Made it all the way back to the pavement at Ubehebe Crater by midnight, and 10 miles later I ran out of gas. 60 miles to Beatty in my friends jeep that still had gas, filled up the gas can again, 60 miles back, and then all the way back to Vegas. Didn't get home till 5 AM. In January, open top CJ5, got quite chilly. That was one LONG day (and night, and morning).
