98 XJ - Mysterious loss of power and MPG

Oh right. Durp.

I just thought of one other obvious thing I should've thought to test. I know there are a thousand different opinions on this, but I knocked out the dent in the down pipe that is "there from factory" or "happens to every jeep because it hits the axle" or "was put there for back-pressure to preheat the exhaust stream for the O2 sensor" or "whatever", and somewhere shortly after is when I noticed the loss of power and fuel economy. I've read a few times that doing so may knock out power/economy, while of course, I've also read that it'll give me another pony and maybe even do my dishes.

I've got two Jeep buddies with sad mufflers that I'll have to replace here this week. Maybe I'll steal a factory down pipe for a few minutes and see what happens before digging into anything else :)
