Thats overkill. There is no issue getting the small amount of water that would drip on your engine from hood vents.
Am i the only one who has power washed his engine bay, and rinsed off the engine bay with a garden hose?
A few drips from hood vents are nothing to worry about.
My factory 15 year old radiator died today. The plastic end tank on the passenger side split.
I went to napa and got the oem replacement they stock. Slight improvements over stock, but basically the same. Not bad for $92
I replaced mine with a 1/4" ID silicone vac hose from napa.
That hose does not need to be plastic.
On the manifold side i cut the plastic to be a straight pipe, stuck the silicone hose over one end, and then stuck the other end back in the manifold how it was.

Easy way to check the housing for flat.
Use a piece of 320 grit sand paper on a flat table or surface. Rub the gasket side of the housing on the sand paper for 30 seconds. Then look at it.
High spots will be sanded, low spots will not be sanded.
Sand until the whole surface is sanded...
I live in northern Il too, and just put in my new thermostat and housing.
I used black hi temp RTV, and the gasket.
I waited about an hour before filling it up with coolant and running the engine.
Chances are the surfaces arent clean, or you have a warped/cracked housing.
I never wait 24hrs for rtv to dry. I use black hi temp rtv on both mating surfaces, and both sides of the gasket.
I dont tourqe them down either.
Its possible you did not clean the head well enough, and its possible the new part is not flat.
The Zj fan clutch engages sooner, and is a bolt on. From what ive read it lowers running temp fairly well.
